Sustainability Issues Are on the NAR Table

After a highly successful Sustainability Summit in New Orleans last month, the Sustainability Advisory Group came together at the Governance meetings at the REALTORS® Conference & Expo in San Francisco to recap the efforts at the Summit and advocacy working group as well as continue to plot the course forward on NAR’s Sustainability Priorities.

The meeting was led by 2019 Chair Craig Foley and 2020 Chair Eileen Oldroyd, with support from early advocates like Todd Shipman and NAR 2014 President Steve Brown. The Leadership Team was represented, including 2020 NAR President Vince Malta. Other great individual contributors across the NAR ranks were there including the GREEN REsource Council, Land Use, Property Rights and Environment Committee, and others. Also, I would be remiss not to mention some of the integral and very talented NAR Staff for all they do in this arena: Amanda Stinton, Russell Riggs, and Hugh Morris, to name just a few.

The sustainability discussion has never been so robust and well received as it has now become. For those of us early adopters in the GREEN Real Estate Space, to finally have helped to move the conversation this far forward is both extremely rewarding and exciting.

There were recommendations from three working groups focused on state and social associations, listing and marketing high performance homes, and advocacy. The advocacy working group has proposed changes to both the energy and global climate change policies that will be reviewed by the leadership team.

I look forward to following, and being a part of, the robust discussion as it continues to evolve and make a positive impact on NAR, the industry, the housing market, property owners, communities, individuals, and of course, the planet!
